Veteran Journalist’s Election Marks a Turning Point for Pacific Media Leadership.
Veteran Tongan journalist Kalafi Moala has been elected as the new President of the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) during its Annual General Meeting held in Niue. With over 30 years of experience in journalism, Moala has made significant contributions to the field through his work as a newspaper editor and FM radio operator, with a strong connection to Tongans overseas.
Moala’s commitment to truth, integrity, and fearless reporting has established him as a respected figure in Pacific journalism. His career has been marked by a dedication to shining a light on critical issues within Tonga and across the region, earning him widespread admiration and recognition. He succeeds Kora Nou, who has served as PINA President since 2018.
The newly elected PINA board includes Leilani Reklai, publisher of Island Times in Palau, as Vice President. Robert Iroga, Founder and Publisher of SBM Online, replaces Illiesa Tora to represent online media. Neville Choi, President of the PNG Media Council, replaces Gina Kekea as the representative for National Media Associations. Esther Pavihi from Niue Broadcasting Corporation represents television, while Katalina Tohi from Tonga continues as the representative for broadcast. Fred Wesley from Fiji Times remains the representative for print media.
PINA, the leading media organization in the Pacific, represents professionals across 20 Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The organization focuses on promoting freedom of expression, professional development, and collaboration among members, and operates PACNEWS, the region’s only daily news service.
