Solomon Islands and the US discuss rural connectivity, satellite internet, AI education tools, development and regional security.
Minister of National Planning and Development Coordination, Peter Kenilorea today met with United States Assistant Secretary of State Mr. Michael Dosembre, on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting focused on strengthening the Solomon Islands–United States partnership, with discussions covering development cooperation, rural connectivity, technology, economic development and regional security.
A key area of discussion was expanding digital connectivity and access to technology for rural and remote communities across Solomon Islands.
Both sides expressed interest in developing public-private partnerships to extend reliable internet access and create greater digital opportunities for underserved communities.
The discussions also explored the expansion of satellite internet services, including through providers such as Starlink, to support remote schools, health clinics and communities.
Minister Kenilorea and Assistant Secretary Dosembre also discussed opportunities to leverage programmes and expertise from U.S. technology companies, including Google, particularly in artificial intelligence-assisted teacher training and digital learning tools for educators.
On economic and development cooperation, the meeting reviewed progress on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact process, including associated infrastructure priorities and opportunities to support Solomon Islands development objectives.
Regional security and stability were also discussed, reflecting the shared interest in a peaceful, secure and prosperous Pacific region.
Minister Kenilorea thanked the United States for its continued engagement with Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific, noting that improving connectivity and access to educational technology in rural communities remains an important priority of the Government’s development agenda.
Assistant Secretary Dosembre reaffirmed the United States commitment to supporting private-sector-led partnerships that can deliver tangible benefits to underserved communities.
Both sides agreed to maintain high-level engagement in the coming months, including through the U.S. Embassy in Honiara to further develop specific areas of cooperation and translate the discussions into practical initiatives.
