Solomon Islands and Kenya establish diplomatic ties, opening cooperation in agriculture, education, climate and digital sectors.
Minister for Foreign Affairs & External Trade Hon. Rick Houenipwela has signed a Joint Communiqué to establish diplomatic relations with Kenya.
Foreign Minister Houenipwela signed with Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The signing marks the beginning of formal bilateral relations between Solomon Islands and Kenya, opening opportunities for practical South-South cooperation across areas of shared interest.
Minister Houenipwela welcomed the agreement highlighting Kenya’s experience in agriculture, food security, climate adaptation and digital transformation as areas where Solomon Islands can exchange knowledge and expertise.
Particular interest was expressed in Kenya’s experience in agriculture and food production as Solomon Islands works to strengthen domestic food security and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The Ministers also discussed opportunities in ICT and digital financial services.
Dr Musiala highlighted education and skills development as potential areas for cooperation, including exchanges and technical cooperation in teacher training, technical and vocational education and digital learning.
These areas align with Solomon Islands’ focus on human capital development and its Free Education Policy.
The two ministers agreed to explore next steps for cooperation in agriculture, food security, climate change, ICT, digital transformation and education.
