Road upgrades in Malaita near completion, improving transport, access to services, and economic opportunities.
Daily life and economic activity are changing for thousands of people as upgrades to 133 km of key roads in Malaita near completion.
The upgrades to the South Road to Hauhui, as well as the Busurata and Fataleka–Subobono roads, are reducing travel time, lowering transport costs, and improving access for farmers, businesses, and service users.
Local residents report improved connectivity. Patteson Uania, a church deacon and small business owner, said that prior to the road improvements, travel to Auki could take an entire day and often required multiple modes of transport. He noted that travel is now faster and more direct.
Communities along the South Road, including Gwaidingale, report improved access to markets, schools, and health services. Dorothy Takabio said transport can now reach communities directly, making it easier to move goods and access essential services.
Community leaders in West Kwaio also point to increased economic activity, with improved access to markets and greater opportunities for income generation.
Across the Central Highlands, the rehabilitation of Busurata Road has restored vehicle access to areas that were previously difficult to reach. Residents noted that poor road conditions had previously limited transport, resulting in agricultural produce spoiling before reaching markets. With improved road conditions, transport services have resumed, supporting increased agricultural activity.
Local businesses are also reporting changes. A tourism lodge owner in the area noted reduced travel time from Auki and an increase in visitors.
In the education sector, improved road access has made travel more reliable for teachers and students. A local school principal reported that staff previously faced significant challenges reaching the school due to limited transport options.
Road works are in the final stages on the three routes, with completion expected within the next month. Preparations are also underway to seal the first 5 km of the South Road from Auki.
The works are being delivered by local contractors, with labour and materials sourced from surrounding communities. A community liaison officer involved in the Busurata Road rehabilitation noted strong local participation and cooperation.
Improved road access has also enhanced the reliability of government services, including health, education, and policing, particularly in previously hard-to-reach areas.
Residents in affected communities report that travel has become easier and more predictable, including improved access to health facilities during emergencies.
