The governments of Solomon Islands and Australia welcomed home 24 Australia Awards scholars at a reception held at the Australian High Commissioner’s residence in Honiara in April.
The reception recognised scholars who have completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies under the Australia Awards program and highlighted the role of alumni in supporting national institutions, leadership, and development.
Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach congratulated the graduates on their completion of studies.
“To the 24 returning scholars—congratulations. You have completed degrees at bachelor, masters or PhD level,” High Commissioner Roach said.
He noted that qualifications gained through the Australia Awards program provide skills, knowledge, and networks to support communities and institutions.
The returning scholars represent sectors including health, education, engineering, climate change, environment, fisheries, and governance.
Representing the Solomon Islands Government, the Minister for Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), Tozen Leokana, thanked Australia for its support and congratulated the graduates.
“The Solomon Islands Government, through MEHRD, remains committed to creating an enabling environment where skills and expertise can be utilised,” Leokana said.
“We look forward to graduates contributing to national development.”
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Australia Awards Alumna Dr Lydia Kaforau said returning scholars have a responsibility to contribute to their communities.

The reception also acknowledged the contributions of Australia Awards alumni and the role of families and communities in supporting the scholars’ success.
