Maoa to Hauhui Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Reaches Halfway Mark

TTC reaches halfway in Maoa–Hauhui road works, advancing bridge repairs and upgrades across Malaita Province

TTC’s progress so far includes cleaning, grubbing, earthworks, and drainage works, completing 16 km of the unsealed road stretch.

For pavement works, TTC continue the supply and placement of road base materials, which have reached 12 km.

TTC’s scope also covers repairing wooden bridge structures along this route. As of last week, they performed urgent repairs on Fulo Bridge, collecting stones and river materials for gabions and structural repairs.

Trades Transformation Company (TTC) has reached the halfway point of its contract to rehabilitate and maintain the road from Maoa in West Kwaio to Hauhui in West Areare, covering a total distance of 32 km.

According to the company, progress to date includes cleaning, grubbing, earthworks, and drainage works, completing 16 km of the unsealed road section. For pavement works, TTC continues supplying and placing road base materials, which now cover 12 km.

TTC’s responsibilities also include repairing wooden bridge structures along the route. As of last week, the team conducted urgent repairs on Fulo Bridge, collecting stones and river materials for gabions and structural restoration.

TTC spokesperson Raymond Steven said the project is expected to be completed by February 2026. He also noted that the team remains ahead of schedule on this route, which links the southern region of Malaita to the provincial capital, Auki.

TTC is additionally contracted to seal the first 5 km of the road from Kwaibala to Oibola (Auki Langalanga/Central Kwara’ae). Mr. Steven confirmed that all necessary equipment, including sealing machinery and technical expertise, has been fully mobilized.

“At this stage, we are fabricating and preparing fencing for the laydown area while urgent maintenance efforts are carried out with grading, forming, and compaction.

“We are preparing for the placement of road-based materials before sealing,” the TTC engineer said.

Two other road repair projects are also underway across Malaita Province:

• Exodus Trade Development’s repairs along Busurata Road in Central Kwara’ae.
• FT Builders and Civil Works’ maintenance of a 37.89 km stretch of unsealed road in East Fataleka.

These improvements represent an investment of nearly SBD 40 million, funded by the Australian Government through the National Transport Fund (NTF). An additional SBD 20 million has been allocated for upgrade works in Honiara.

Acting Australian High Commissioner Andrew Schloeffel commended the rapid progress of the projects.

“These road improvements are reopening access to local markets, government services, and economic opportunity,” Mr. Schloeffel said.

“We salute the local workers and local companies around the country who are stepping up to the challenge of delivering high-quality, resilient infrastructure under the Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership.”

“Under the governance of the National Transport Board and with delivery by local companies, Solomon Islanders are taking the lead in building high-quality infrastructure—and Australia is proud to be part of this effort,” he said.

The Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) within the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) continues to oversee the projects to ensure compliance with quality standards.

Additional road upgrades for Malaita’s network are included in next year’s government budget to support economic and social activities.
