Sailing is a Compulsory sport and one of the 24 sports in the Pacific Games to be competed in Honiara come November 2023. Sailing was first contested in Port Moresby in 1969 and was also included at Pacific Mini Games. New Caledonia, usually dominate the medal tally not only for the Pacific Games but also for this sport, Sailing. In Honiara, preparations are now well underway for the Sailing team despite the many challenges and obstacles they continued to face on a day-to-day basis. Lack of boards, rescue boats, wind, the challenges seems endless and the team has only six (6) months to prepare before the game commence in November. However they remain optimistic despite the odds.
Sailing is not competed by many in Solomon Islands. However the sport has been played since Olympic Games in Greece 1896.
The world governing body of sailing was founded in 1907. It was initially called the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU). The name was changed to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) in 1996 and then World Sailing in 2015.
