Ministry of Infrastructure Leads Efforts in Overseeing Implementation of Road Enhancements on East Malaita 21km stretch of road
The rehabilitation and upgrades of a critical 21-kilometer stretch of Malaita’s East Road are currently underway, supported by the World Bank through the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP). The Ministry of Infrastructure Development is overseeing the implementation of these improvements. The local contractor, Trades Transformation Company Limited, is responsible for the execution of the works, with supervision provided by a team from SMEC based in Auki.
Commencing on October 16, 2023, emergency clearance and soft spot repairs at Dala (Forcim Market) have covered 10.8 kilometers of the East Road over the past 1.5 months. Road users are already experiencing safer and smoother travel on the repaired sections. The ongoing efforts are progressing well, with a second shipment of concrete material scheduled to arrive on site next week. This shipment will facilitate the completion of concrete works, including lined drainage and pavement on four steep sections covering 1,100 meters of the East Road.
Emergency clearance and soft spot repairs for the remaining 21 kilometers of the road are expected to be completed within two months due to the deteriorating condition of the current road. Once all emergency clearance and soft spot repairs are finished, more permanent road works will follow.
Stephen Maesiola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, highlighted the significance of this upgrade work. According to him, these improvements will enhance trade, providing access to markets, essential services, and medical attention for the people of East Malaita. He expressed optimism about the project, stating that it represents a substantial improvement in the area’s infrastructure, promising smoother travel for local communities and businesses.
In addition to the East Road project, the World Bank is also supporting the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2). This broader initiative includes the construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), road upgrades in Noro, and improvements to Honiara, Munda, and Santa Cruz (Lata) Airports. The project also involves upgrading air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, as well as supporting airport maintenance.
