MEHRD launches training videos to support teacher development and improve education quality in Solomon Islands.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) is working to enhance educational opportunities and promote the delivery of quality education for all children in the Solomon Islands, in partnership with the governments of Australia and New Zealand.
At the 2025 Principals’ Conference held in Honiara last week, the partners launched ten short professional development training videos aimed at supporting teachers and school leaders across the country.
The three-day conference brought together over 300 school leaders from various provinces, focusing on strategies to improve access to and quality of education.
The training videos were developed under the Education Sector Support Program (ESSP) and offer practical guidance on implementing new curriculum materials, promoting hygiene practices, and supporting gender and disability inclusion and child protection in the classroom.
These professional resources represent an innovative approach to enhancing teaching practices and sharing important information with educators throughout the country.
One of the videos, focusing on child protection, provides guidance to teachers on identifying students in need of support and outlines key steps to ensure their safety and well-being.
Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton, acknowledged the vital role of school principals, stating:
“You are out there, working hard every day, striving to ensure that every student gets the life-changing gift of education.”
New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Curr emphasized the joint commitment of New Zealand and Australia to advancing professional development in the Solomon Islands education sector. He noted that ESSP budget support to MEHRD will continue through 2026, with an ongoing focus on improving access to quality education.
The training videos are accessible via free platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and MEHRD’s official website.
