Sikaiana people warmly welcome back US anthropologist Prof. Bill Donner after 32 years with chants and tradition.

In a touching cultural homecoming, the Sikaiana people yesterday welcomed back American anthropologist Professor Bill Donner — 32 years after he last lived among them.
Now based at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, Prof. Donner spent more than three years on Sikaiana between 1980 and 1993, studying the island’s traditions, social life, and beliefs. He became a respected and familiar figure in the community — and his return was celebrated with chants, dances, and traditional food at the Sikaiana Cultural Village at Red Beach.
The village, usually open for tourists and VIP guests, was opened only for Prof. Donner — a sign of the special place he holds in the hearts of the Sikaiana people.
During his visit to Honiara, Prof. Donner will meet with community members to explore how his research can benefit the people it documents. He also plans to meet Solomon Islands National University academics and museum and archive officials.
And, shipping schedule allowing, he hopes to visit Sikaiana island itself — for one last walk and swim where it all began. And before he returns to the United States on 19 July.
