PM Manele highlights Malaita development, infrastructure progress, and plans to address rising fuel costs
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Thursday 2 April 2026 – Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to delivering practical development across Malaita and the wider Solomon Islands, during a press conference held in Auki on Wednesday 1 April 2026.
Speaking during Holy Week, Prime Minister Manele emphasized that leadership is grounded in service, unity, and responsibility, as he updated the nation on key development priorities and progress.
The Prime Minister highlighted significant infrastructure milestones in Malaita, including the official opening of Kolofe 1 and Kolofe 2 bridges in North Malaita, with the Su’u and Bira bridges in South Malaita scheduled for handover.
“These are not just projects—they are lifelines connecting communities, supporting farmers, and ensuring safer access to schools and services,” he said.
In Auki, progress continues on the town’s road tar-sealing project, with drainage works currently underway. The Government is also expanding its support for agriculture through the establishment of a new Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock office, which will serve local farmers and 45 agribusiness groups.
Additionally, ground was broken for the Customary Land Recording Office—the first of its kind outside Honiara—aimed at strengthening land ownership systems and reducing disputes.
Improvements at Kilufi Hospital are ongoing with support from the Government of Japan, while preparatory work continues at Bina Harbour, a key long-term economic project.
Prime Minister Manele also raised concern over reports of vandalism affecting public infrastructure, urging communities to take ownership of government-funded developments.
“These facilities belong to our people. Protecting them ensures lasting benefits for our children and future generations,” he stressed.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that development efforts are ongoing across all provinces, including infrastructure upgrades, health services, tourism growth, and key economic projects.
“Our focus is simple—development must reach all provinces. Our people and our country come first,” he said.
Prime Minister Manele acknowledged the impact of rising global fuel prices due to international conflicts, noting that the Government is preparing measures to ease the burden on citizens.
Proposed actions include reducing tariffs and charges, and reviewing fuel import duty and Goods Services Tax. The Government is also working to ensure fair fuel pricing and exploring long-term solutions to reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Addressing recent political developments, the Prime Minister assured the public that Government operations continue uninterrupted.
“Ministries are functioning, public services are being delivered, and we have full confidence in the independence of our courts,” he said, urging citizens to remain calm and respect the judicial process.
As the country approaches Easter, Prime Minister Manele called for unity, reflection, and continued commitment to national development.
“The work we are doing is about building a better future for our country and generations to come,” he said.
