Kolofe 1 and 2 bridges open in north Malaita, improving safe travel, access to services and economic activity.
Two new bridges in northern Malaita have opened to the public, improving road access for remote communities along the island’s main transport route.
The Kolofe 1 and Kolofe 2 bridges, located on the North Road along the Lau Mbaelelea corridor, are now in use by vehicles and pedestrians after completion by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development and its project partners.
The structures replace older crossings that were vulnerable to flooding and damage, which had frequently disrupted travel in the area.
Built with climate resilience in mind, the bridges are expected to provide more reliable and safer passage, particularly during periods of heavy rain. They also improve access to essential services and markets for communities in Fouia, the Lau Lagoon and the Baegu region.
For residents in North Malaita, where transport links have long been affected by weather and deteriorating infrastructure, the upgrades mark a shift towards more dependable connectivity.
The improved road access is also expected to support local economic activity by easing the movement of goods and people along the North Road, a key route for rural communities.
The project was funded by the World Bank through the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project II (SIRAP 2), which focuses on strengthening climate resilience and road safety.
