CEO Jasper Anisi announces official 2025 West Guadalcanal by-election results, confirming Mary Garu as elected MP.
Chief Electoral Officer Jasper Highwood Anisi has officially declared the final results of the 2025 West Guadalcanal Constituency By-Election, confirming Mary Daniela Zae Garu as the duly elected Member of Parliament.
Anisi made the announcement on Saturday at the headquarters of the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) in Honiara, following the transmission of results from the Returning Officer at the West Guadalcanal counting centre the previous evening.
In his address, Anisi confirmed that Mary Garu received the highest number of votes with a total of 3,157. Her nearest rival, Anthony Kamutulaka Veke, secured 2,855 votes, followed by Philp Junior Manakako with 859. The remaining candidates—Pascal Kimavora Belamatanga, Donisiano Keli, and Titus Sura—received 67, 51, and 48 votes respectively.
A total of 7,046 ballots were cast in the by-election, representing an estimated voter turnout of 87 percent from the constituency’s 8,098 registered voters. Nine votes were rejected.
Anisi acknowledged the significance of the voter turnout, noting that it reflected a high level of public engagement in the electoral process. He also commended election officials, voters, and stakeholders for their cooperation and commitment, which he said contributed to the smooth and peaceful conduct of the by-election.
The West Guadalcanal by-election was held to fill the vacancy created by the passing of the late Member of Parliament, Moses Garu. The Electoral Commission confirmed that the polling and counting were carried out in accordance with the country’s electoral laws and procedures.
Anisi stated that the Commission was satisfied with the overall conduct of the by-election and expressed confidence in the integrity of the outcome.
The elected member is expected to be sworn in at the next sitting of Parliament.
