SICTU urges swift tabling of reforms to modernize and improve public service efficiency.
The Solomon Islands Council of Trade Unions (SICTU) has welcomed the recent announcement by the Minister of Public Service regarding the introduction of new public service legislation. The proposed legislation, set to be tabled in Parliament, is viewed as a necessary step toward modernizing the public service sector to better meet the needs of the community.
SICTU acknowledged the importance of updating the existing framework, noting that the current General Order is outdated and no longer aligns with the evolving requirements of the public service. The council emphasized that the proposed reforms would help create a more efficient, transparent, and responsive public service capable of addressing contemporary challenges and delivering better outcomes for the public.
The Council is urging the minister to consider tabling the new legislation as early as the December 2024 parliamentary sitting, highlighting the urgency for reform.
In collaboration with its member unions and associations—such as the Solomon Islands Public Employees Union, Solomon Islands Medical Association, Solomon Islands National Teachers Association, Solomon Islands Nursing Association, Solomon Islands Allied Health Association, and the Police Association—SICTU is committed to working closely with the Public Service Commission and other oversight bodies. This partnership aims to identify and address gaps in public service delivery, improve service quality, and enhance the welfare of public officers.
