Education, Honesty and Experience Key in Candidate Selection
As Solomon Islands braces for its upcoming election, insights into voter perceptions and challenges have emerged, shedding light on the electorate’s priorities.
The third survey by local Researchers from BBC Media Action found that voters remain skeptical of campaign promises, including commitments to free education and improved infrastructure. Despite hearing such pledges, there’s a lack of widespread belief in candidates’ ability to deliver on these assurances.
Education, honesty, and experience are cited as key factors in candidate selection, with voters prioritizing individuals who demonstrate a genuine commitment to addressing societal issues.
However there are concerns regarding the influence of money in politics, with reports of financial incentives being distributed to secure votes. This practice, observed across rural areas and during voter registration, raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process.
Additionally, there’s a desire for increased female representation in parliament. Only 20 women have been nominated for this year’s election.
Social media’s role in shaping opinions is acknowledged, yet concerns linger over biased content and inflammatory remarks, prompting calls for responsible online discussion.
Looking ahead, citizens emphasize the importance of addressing pressing challenges, including access to education and healthcare, resolving land disputes, and improving infrastructure. Calls for job creation, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation emphasised the diverse needs of the country.
With the election looming, both candidates and citizens are urged to uphold democratic principles and work towards shared progress.
