High Commissioner Soaki briefs PM Manele on Solomon Islands–PNG cooperation, security ties and upcoming initiatives
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Tuesday 20 January 2026 – The Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency William Soaki, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele in Honiara this morning.
High Commissioner Soaki conveyed New Year greetings to Prime Minister Manele and expressed appreciation for his leadership. He commended the Prime Minister for his continued commitment to advancing the partnership between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
The High Commissioner provided an update on the relationship between the two countries, highlighting ongoing cooperation in education, including scholarship awards, as well as collaboration in the judiciary, sports, the private sector, and a new budget support programme by Papua New Guinea for the Solomon Islands. He noted the high level of diplomatic engagement between both nations and ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties in 2026.
He also briefed the Prime Minister on upcoming initiatives, including the inaugural Solomon Islands–Papua New Guinea Business Forum to be held in Honiara this year, and the first bi-annual meeting between the two countries’ Foreign Ministers. These initiatives reflect continued efforts to deepen trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement.
High Commissioner Soaki also highlighted security and police cooperation between the two countries. Discussions included the Solomon Islands sharing its specialised expertise in unexploded ordnance (UXO) handling with Papua New Guinea, as well as other areas where Papua New Guinea could support capacity strengthening in the Solomon Islands, including police training. Several of these opportunities remain under development, reflecting potential for further collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Looking ahead to the Solomon Islands’ 50th Independence Anniversary in 2028, Prime Minister Manele noted the country’s interest in learning from Papua New Guinea’s recent 50th Independence celebrations as preparations begin for its own milestone.
Prime Minister Manele thanked High Commissioner Soaki for his service in representing the Solomon Islands in Port Moresby. He reaffirmed the strategic importance of maintaining a strong relationship with Papua New Guinea and expressed satisfaction with progress across shared areas of cooperation.
