Forests and Innovation Theme Highlights Global Conservation Efforts
A total of over 500 trees have been planted, accompanied by an awareness talk episode with the National Broadcaster, SIBC and a public display of various stalls by the Ministry of Forestry and Research at Town Ground, all aimed at raising awareness about forests on International Forest Day, commemorated on March 21.
Solomon Islands joined the global community in marking this year’s International Forest Day.
The theme for this year is “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.”
Richard Raomae, the Forestry Permanent Secretary, emphasized in his message the importance of reflecting on the vital role forests have played in our lives in the past and ensuring their sustainability for the future. He urged everyone to reconnect with the forest and recognize its numerous benefits, especially its contributions to our health and well-being.
Joanne Aihunu, PEBACC+ SI Coordinator, echoed these sentiments, underlining the critical role forests play in sustaining life on our planet. She emphasized that forests are not only crucial for biodiversity but also essential for mitigating climate change and providing livelihoods for millions of people worldwide.
Aihunu stressed the significance of this year’s theme in addressing the challenges facing our forests, advocating for innovative approaches and technologies to combat deforestation and forest degradation.
She highlighted the collaborative efforts between SPREP, the Solomon Islands Government, and other stakeholders in implementing projects like Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change (PEBACC+), aimed at ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation.
In collaboration with various partners including JICA, VATA, SINU, SPREP and Secondary Form six students from Mbokona High School, the Ministry of Forestry and Research commemorated the International Day of Forest, focusing on activities such as nursery improvement, reforestation programs, livelihood support, and ecosystem services assessments. These initiatives aim to contribute significantly to climate mitigation, enhance food security, and promote sustainable forest management practices across the country.
