Solomon Islands Strengthens Border Security with New Outposts Aligned to 50th Independence Anniversary Goals.
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Tuesday 24 March 2026 – The Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national sovereignty, with the Eastern and Western Border Outpost projects now aligned with the country’s 50th Anniversary development priorities. These border outposts will accommodate all law enforcement agencies and are underpinned by a whole of government approach to managing our border security.
A government team comprising officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services (MPNSCS) is currently on a site visit to Vanikoro in Temotu Province to progress critical infrastructure works aimed at enhancing border security and national resilience in the eastern region.
These outposts are designed to secure the country’s borders, support safe and orderly movement, facilitate regional trade, and safeguard maritime resources for future generations.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has highlighted the importance of aligning key national projects with the country’s journey towards its 50th anniversary of independence in 2028.
“Reaching 50 years of independence is a significant milestone for our country. Our goal is to transform Solomon Islands into a nation that is strong, united, secure, and self-reliant—leaving behind a legacy we can all be proud of,” the Prime Minister said.
For the Western Border Outpost, construction is now in its final stages, with completion expected between April and June 2026. This project is set to be a major achievement leading into the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
For the Eastern Border Outpost, following successful consultations held on 20 March with landowning groups in Vanikoro, the project remains on track for completion by 2028. Supported by the Australian Government, the outpost will deliver a critical security presence alongside socio-economic benefits for communities in the eastern border region.
The Government acknowledges the strong partnership with the Temotu Provincial Government and traditional landowners, ensuring that development is inclusive, community-driven, and culturally respectful.
