Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele commends Rennell and Bellona’s reforms, highlights progress, and pledges continued government support.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has congratulated the people and leaders of Rennell and Bellona Province on their progress, describing the province’s reform efforts as a powerful example of resilience, leadership, and people-driven development.
Speaking during the 32nd Second Appointed Day anniversary celebration in Tigoa, Manele acknowledged the significant strides made while emphasizing the importance of unity and partnership going forward.
“This is my first time here in Rennell, and I’m truly honoured to be part of your celebration. This day is about celebrating how far you’ve come — the results you’ve delivered and the challenges you’ve overcome together.”
The Prime Minister praised the Alliance for Reform and Progress Government, led by Premier Derek Pongi, for embracing reform and restoring trust in the provincial government.
Over the past year, the province has implemented 19 capital projects across health, education, rural electrification, sanitation, administration, tourism, and fisheries — with nearly SBD 3 million invested.
“These projects have touched every part of life in your communities. They show what can be achieved when provincial leadership, national support, and development partners work together.”
He noted recent improvements in PCDF eligibility, digital service access, and accountability in Ward Development Committee (WDC) grants.
Manele also addressed concerns raised by the Premier:
- Shipping access: Government will follow up on delivering a vessel for Rennell and Bellona and review the shipping franchise system to improve services to remote provinces.
- Electoral reform: Encouraged collaboration with MPGIS to propose a new ward and avoid political deadlocks.
- Constituency boundary: The request for an additional constituency has been acknowledged and will be submitted to the appropriate authority.
- Land tenure: Government will consult with the Ministry of Lands and stakeholders on returning alienated land in West Rennell to customary ownership.
- Biosecurity and agriculture: Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) is intensifying efforts against the rhinoceros beetle and boosting food security. A new officer will be posted to Tigoa this year, with recruitment underway in Bellona.
- Education and health: Both ministries have been asked to review infrastructure gaps and consider service enhancements.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed government support for those affected by the Solomon Trader oil spill:
“We stand with you. We’ve instructed international law firm DLA Piper to work with the Pacific Legal Network to support your case. We are also working to secure litigation funding and appreciate the support from the Australian Government who funded the latest environmental report.”
He stressed the importance of accountability:
“The message is clear: companies that cause harm must be held accountable.”
Manele also welcomed efforts to establish a sister-province relationship with China’s Hainan Province, supported by the Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening and the Chinese Embassy in Honiara.
He acknowledged contributions from development partners including Australia, PRC, EU, World Bank, UNDP, and ADB, in areas such as health, education, security, lighting, and tourism.
Highlighting the province’s status as both a province and a national constituency, Manele called for better coordination between the Provincial Government and Constituency Office:
“This province has come a long way. But let’s not be complacent. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to deliver for our people.”
He concluded with a message of encouragement:
“The story of Rennell and Bellona is no longer just about remoteness or missed opportunities — it is now about reform, resilience and results. The Government for National Unity and Transformation will continue to stand with you.”
