PM Manele opens Su’u and Bira bridges, boosting connectivity, safety, and economic growth in Malaita Province
Honiara, Solomon Islands, Thursday 2 April 2026 – Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele yesterday officiated the handing over and opening of the Su’u and Bira bridges under the Malaita South Road Bridges Lot 2 project in West Kwaio, Malaita Province.
The two bridges were delivered under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP II), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Manele said the completion of the bridges marks an important step in improving connectivity and supporting development in the southern part of Malaita.
He highlighted that infrastructure development remains a key priority under the Government for National Unity and Transformation, particularly in supporting economic activity and improving the quality of life for citizens.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the contributions of key partners, including the World Bank, contractors, engineers, and local workers, as well as the support of the Malaita Provincial Government, community leaders, and landowners.
He thanked communities for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period.
The project represents an investment of over USD 6.5 million (approximately SBD 52.1 million).
Prime Minister Manele said the bridges will improve access to essential services, reduce travel time, and enhance road safety, while supporting local economic opportunities.
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
The Prime Minister officially declared the Su’u and Bira bridges open for public use.
