Upgrade on North Malaita road starts this week.
This week marks the beginning of maintenance and upgrades on 17 kilometers of Malaita’s North Road, spanning from Gwanaru’u Junction to Forcim Market. The initiative is made possible through support from the World Bank under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP).
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has entrusted local contractor Exodus Trade Development Limited with the responsibility of carrying out the works. Supervision will be provided by SMEC, with their team stationed in Auki.
These upgrades hold immense significance for the people of North Malaita. With these improvements, the burden on local communities will be alleviated, enabling easier access to services in Auki and fostering stronger connections between Malaitans, along with enhanced opportunities for employment and business ventures.
Under the umbrella of SIRAP, the World Bank is further financing similar works on 21 kilometers of the East Road in Malaita, extending from Forcim Market to the midpoint of the East Road. Additionally, Malaita’s three bridges, namely Bio1, Bio2, and Koa Bridges, are set for replacement. The World Bank’s support also extends to the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), which encompasses the construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe1, Kolofe2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), road upgrades in Noro, and improvements to Honiara, Munda, and Santa Cruz Airports. The initiative will also focus on upgrading air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, while providing ongoing support for airport maintenance.
