Solomon Islanders in South Australia Celebrate Cultural Identity at 46th Independence Anniversary Event
Solomon Islanders residing in South Australia were encouraged to uphold and celebrate their cultural identities during the 46th anniversary independence celebration on Saturday, July 6th, 2024. Priestley Habru, the student representative of the Solomon Islands Wantok Association of South Australia (SIWASA), delivered this message to over 200 attendees, including guests from various organizations such as the Pacific Islands Council of South Australia (PICSA), the Australia Refugee Association (ARA), and others.
“We must maintain our cultural identities while embracing diversity,” emphasized Habru. “As Solomon Islanders living in a foreign country, it’s important to engage with our local communities, respect our hosts, and contribute positively to society.”
The event, organized by SIWASA committee members Loviness Kalialaha, Eluether Kalialaha, Selina Koudi, Billy Nunu, and Samson Bisafo, with support from Helen Sinclair, featured cultural performances, the singing of the national anthem, and a festive atmosphere with raffle tickets offering Solomon Islands gifts as prizes.
SIWASA President Kathy Koraua, unable to attend due to overseas commitments, expressed gratitude to all participants and contributors.
