Defection of 19 MPs leaves PM in minority as opposition alliance forms and no-confidence motion is filed.
The defection of 19 government ministers and backbenchers to the Opposition and independent ranks has left the Prime Minister leading a minority government.
The defecting members have joined Opposition and independent groups, bringing their total to 28 Members of Parliament. A group of 27 MPs participated in a photo session, excluding one member who is currently overseas.
The group has signed a new coalition agreement and submitted a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister.
In a statement, the group said the decisions were made after careful consideration and cited internal divisions, lack of trust, and concerns about the government’s direction as contributing factors.
The development raises constitutional and governance questions regarding the government’s ability to maintain majority support and effectively govern following the loss of members from within its ranks.
The situation represents a significant shift in parliamentary numbers and alignment.
