MID and partners inspect bridge projects in Malaita, noting progress and community feedback on climate-resilient works.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) Safeguards Unit was part of a joint inspection team that visited four bridge construction sites in Malaita Province last week.
Chief Safeguards Officer Roxsley Basil confirmed the team included representatives from MID’s Auki office, the Project Support Team, construction supervision engineers from EGIS, and the contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The inspection began with visits to Kolofe 1 and Kolofe 2 bridges along the North Road, where the team also held a meeting with the local Community Advisory Committee (CAC).
“A few concerns were raised during the meeting and noted by the relevant stakeholders for follow-up,” Mr. Basil said.
The same inspection and community engagement activities were carried out at Su’u and Bira bridges located along the West Kwaio road.
According to Mr. Basil, construction progress for the four bridges currently stands at approximately 48%, with works reported to be moving ahead as planned.
The bridge projects are funded by the World Bank under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP 2), specifically through Component 2, which focuses on Climate Resilience and Safety Investments in the road sector.
