MHMS condemns the burning of New Tenabuti Health Clinic, urging communities to protect vital health facilities
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has condemned the burning of the New Tenabuti Health Clinic on 26 December 2025, an incident that caused extensive damage to essential health infrastructure and disrupted health services for surrounding communities.
Reports confirm that the incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. at the New Tenabuti Health Clinic in Paripao Ward, Guadalcanal Province. Investigations have determined that the fire was a deliberate act of arson. The entire clinic structure was destroyed, along with all medical equipment and supplies. The Ministry expressed concern about the impact on patients who relied on the facility for healthcare services.
“This is a senseless and unacceptable act that undermines the health and wellbeing of our people. Health facilities are safe spaces meant to serve communities, and any attack on them is an attack on public health,” said MHMS Supervising Permanent Secretary Layten Jacob.
The Ministry is working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident and identify those responsible. MHMS has urged members of the public to respect and protect health facilities, which play a critical role in delivering essential healthcare services.
“We call on communities to protect these facilities and report any suspicious activities. Together, we must safeguard our health system,” Mr. Jacob added.
The New Tenabuti Health Clinic previously provided clinical services to communities including Kolosulu, Papae, Reko, Geza, New Tenabuti, Ruavatu, and other nearby settlements. Since the incident, residents have been required to travel to Numbu, Ghombua, or the Good Samaritan Hospital to access health services.
