Prime Minister Manele calls for MPs to choose a Governor-General with integrity and strong community standing
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele is urging Members of Parliament to exercise good judgment in selecting the next Governor-General. Manele introduced a special motion on Monday concerning the selection of the Governor-General, emphasizing the importance of choosing a candidate with a strong reputation in the community. He encouraged MPs to nominate individuals deserving of this prestigious position, stating that the appointed individual will represent the head of state and must possess an impeccable standing within the community.
The Governor-General in the Solomon Islands serves as the representative of the head of state, who is the monarch of the Commonwealth realms. This position holds ceremonial duties and symbolic significance, representing unity and stability within the country.
The election process for the Governor-General involves nominations over three days. The parliamentary vote for the election of the governor-general is scheduled for Monday, June 17, 2024. Parliament will decide the appointment either through consensus or by ballot. The chosen candidate must demonstrate qualities of integrity, community standing and commitment to serving the country’s interests.

Simultaneously, the outgoing Governor-General, Sir David Vunagi and Lady Vunagi paid their final farewell courtesy call on Tuesday, June 4, to His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. During the farewell courtesy call in-person, the outgoing Governor-General had the opportunity to present to His Majesty the Star of Solomon Islands, the highest award in the Order of Solomon Islands Honors and Awards system. Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth II was the first recipient of this award in 1982. His Majesty King Charles conveyed his best wishes and honor to HE Sir David for his steadfast service and perseverance to the country, the people of Solomon Islands and the Commonwealth.
