CCECC and MID warn Honiara residents to stay out of road construction sites to prevent injuries and protect public safety
Contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) remind the Honiara public, including pedestrians, parents, and children, that construction sites are restricted areas and must not be entered at any time for safety reasons.
Currently the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP) road component construction is focused at the Rove stretch, the Heritage Park Roundabout, and along the Mendana Avenue Road (Point Cruz).
The contractor and safeguards team have observed continued incidents of pedestrians walking through active construction zones and children playing football inside barricaded construction areas, even after work hours. This amounts to trespassing and extremely dangerous placing of lives at risk.
Construction sites contain hazardous materials, trenches, heavy machinery, construction materials, uneven surfaces, and other safety risks that may not be clearly visible. These dangers remain present at all times, even when construction work has paused for the day and workers are not on site.
The public (road users and nearby communities) is reminded that all barricades, safety fences, warning tapes, cones, and signage are installed for public protection and must not be crossed, removed, or ignored under any circumstances. Entering barricaded areas is a serious safety violation.
Parents and guardians are urged to look out for their children, ensuring they don’t enter construction sites for any reason, including fun activities and playing soccer or outdoor sports. Construction areas are not playgrounds and can result in serious injury or fatal accidents.
Pedestrians are requested to use only designated walkways, footpaths, and alternative routes provided around construction sites. These designated areas have been clearly identified to ensure safe access for the passing public while works are ongoing.
“Safety of workers and the public is top priority when executing this road upgrade.
“We seek your cooperation to help prevent accidents, protect lives, and allow works to proceed safely and efficiently,” MID’s Supervising Permanent Secretary Mr. Mike Qaqara said.
He adds that school administrations and teachers in West and Central Honiara must also share this reminder with their students now that the academic year commences.
In the meantime, once CCECC completes the full asphalting of the Tandai Highway (which spans from White River to Townground), they will then shift all their resources to the Mendana Avenue Road (HP Roundabout to Honiara City Council Roundabout) in the coming months.
TIMSD continues to provide oversight supervision during this phase and appreciates road users, business establishments, and community members for their patience and cooperation as this collaborative project by the Solomon Islands Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) transforms Honiara’s city road infrastructure.
