Betivatu Community High School marks a milestone with its first-ever Form 6 graduation in Guadalcanal
Betivatu, October 16, 2025. A significant milestone was reached at Betivatu Community High School in Malango, Central Guadalcanal, as the school hosted its first-ever Form 6 graduation ceremony under the theme “Empowering Partnership in Education.” The event was graced by guest of honour, Ms. Pamela Alamu.

In her keynote address, Ms. Alamu emphasized the importance of faith in education. “No way will you go wrong if you put God first in your education,” she said, encouraging graduates to prioritize faith alongside academic excellence. She highlighted that the true purpose of education lies in making a positive difference within communities.
“Many times, we view education as a means to obtain qualifications and secure employment. However, education goes beyond that. We are truly educated when we make a positive influence in our communities,” Ms. Alamu added.
School Principal Mr. Matthew Gideon acknowledged the significance of collaboration in education, describing the event as “a celebration of the power of partnership.” He commended the efforts of parents, teachers, and students, noting their collective contribution to the school’s progress.
Mr. Gideon highlighted several recent achievements, including the graduation of the first cohort of Form 6 Arts students, completion of a new sanitation project, and the donation of 27 laptops and two overhead projectors from Maitland School in Australia.

However, he also identified ongoing challenges such as limited parental support, delayed fee payments, and acts of vandalism. “Nurturing of students at home is lacking. What I meant is that many parents send their children to school and consider their responsibility fulfilled. It’s the teachers who worry about the rest. We have observed that at least 50% of enrolled students face attitude and behavior problems in school,” he said.
He further noted that late fee payments hinder the school’s development. “When parents delay in paying fees, it sets us back,” Mr. Gideon stated. He also raised concerns about the lack of ownership and pride among students and the community, saying, “If you’re frustrated, this is where you vent your frustration. This behavior shows that we don’t own the school.”

Representing the SSEC Education Authority, Mr. Exodus Bobotu extended warm greetings to the graduates and their families. He encouraged students to reflect on their achievements and prepare for future endeavors. “Graduation ceremony is a time to reflect on all the hard work, struggle, and achievements, but also it is a time to look forward to what graduates are going to do after leaving the school,” he said. Mr. Bobotu also acknowledged God’s faithfulness and guidance throughout the academic year.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of academic and consolation prizes to both primary and secondary students, recognizing their dedication and achievements in their studies.
