New Buala Market to support over 150 vendors, boosting inclusive economic opportunities in Isabel Province.
The new Buala Market has been designed in consultation with vendors and the local community to create an inclusive and accessible space for more than 150 vendors. Once completed, it is expected to enhance economic opportunities for women, people with disabilities, and the broader community.
The project is being delivered under Australia’s Provincial Markets Redevelopment Program, which aims to support Solomon Islands’ economic and social development through climate-resilient infrastructure, local employment, and long-term partnerships.
This week, the Member for Maringe-Kokota and Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, Cathy Nori, joined Premier of Isabel Province, Lawrence Hayward, and Australian officials in visiting the new market and engaging with vendors at the temporary market site.
Minister Nori expressed her appreciation for the facilities under construction, noting their potential to transform livelihoods in the area.
“I’m impressed by the attention given to the needs of the many women who will use this market to increase their family income,” she said.
She highlighted features such as showers, toilets, and changing rooms designed for women and children, as well as accessibility features for people with disabilities. “These facilities set a new standard for inclusive, high-quality infrastructure that can support income generation and improve livelihoods,” Nori added.
She also thanked the Australian Government for funding the project, noting that most market vendors are women who need safe and supportive environments for both themselves and their families. “This will be a space where communities can earn an income and build better lives,” she said. “I encourage our youth to take pride in maintaining it.”
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton, said the visit showcased the results of multiple projects delivered in Isabel Province through the Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership.
“Australia has supported more than 30 projects in Isabel Province over the past five years, from roads and health centres to schools and solar energy systems,” Hilton said. “The Buala Market will be a valuable asset to the town and surrounding communities and is another strong example of our commitment to local partnerships, with the entire construction workforce made up of Solomon Islanders.”
He added that building with local content doubles the economic impact of infrastructure investments, which aligns with the Solomon Islands Government’s priorities to boost economic activity.
Premier Lawrence Hayward also welcomed the visit and acknowledged the broader benefits of Australian support in the province. He highlighted other recent projects, such as the solar power system at Dudley Tuti College, the installation of a 3G tower in Kia, and community initiatives under the Community Partnerships Program.
Bronston Ramosea, project engineer with Tropic Group Builders, confirmed that construction is progressing well.
“We’ve nearly completed the floor and walls,” he said. “Next, we’ll begin roofing, install electrical systems, and finish the market stalls and railings.”
