Solomon Islands Mothers’ Union joins global members in marking 150 years of faith, service and support for families.
The Provincial Mothers’ Union Office in Honiara has joined more than four million members worldwide to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mothers’ Union—a pioneering Christian movement supporting families, strengthening communities, and transforming lives since 1876.
Guided by the global anniversary theme, “Join Us, Join In: Lighting the Way for Generations to Come,” members across Melanesia are participating in a season of thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed commitment to community service.
The global milestone was recently launched in Durban, South Africa, where over 2,000 Mothers’ Union leaders gathered for worship and future planning. As global commemorations draw to a close, members throughout the Anglican Church of Melanesia are bringing the celebration home to their local dioceses.
This landmark carries deep regional significance. Alongside 150 years globally, Melanesian members are giving thanks for 107 years of active local ministry. For over a century, women across the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia have faithfully nurtured families, promoted Christian values, and addressed evolving social, economic, and environmental challenges.
Today, the Mothers’ Union in Melanesia comprises more than 14,000 members across the ten dioceses of the Anglican Church of Melanesia: Vanuatu and New Caledonia, Banks and Torres, Temotu, Hanuato’o, Ysabel, Malaita, Central Solomons, Central Melanesia, Guadalcanal, and Southern Malaita and Sikaiana.
Throughout October, diocesan gatherings are bringing together generations of members to honor past leadership while reaffirming a unified vision for the future.
The movement remains dedicated to three primary pillars: ending violence, poverty, and injustice. As a grassroots organization rooted in local parishes, the Mothers’ Union listens to local needs and responds with faith-driven action to create lasting change from the ground up.
The Provincial Mothers’ Union Office extends heartfelt gratitude to the Most Rev. Leonard Dawea, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia, all Diocesan Bishops, and the Bishops’ wives for their spiritual guidance, prayers, and steadfast support.
Grounded in Matthew 5:16 (“Let your light shine before others”), members remain dedicated to lighting the way for future generations through faith in action, compassionate service, and hope for stronger families and communities.
