MID urges communities to protect road signs as speed hump works progress along the Henderson–Mberande Road corridor.
Work on the installation of speed humps at various locations along the Henderson–Mberande Road in Guadalcanal Province is currently progressing under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID).
The speed hump works form part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and traffic management along the Henderson–Mberande corridor, particularly in locations where motorists need to reduce speed to improve safety for pedestrians, nearby communities and other road users.
As part of the works, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has been carrying out the installation works at strategic locations to provide motorists with advance warning of speed humps and other changes in road conditions.
However, MID has observed that some of the newly installed road signs have been vandalised, damaged or removed. The Ministry is concerned that damage to road safety infrastructure could compromise the safety of motorists and other road users.
MID Permanent Secretary Mike Qaqara said the road signs are essential safety infrastructure and appealed to communities and road users to help protect them.
“These road signs are installed for the safety of everyone using the road. They provide important warnings to motorists and help pedestrians and communities understand changes in the road environment. When signs are vandalised or removed, it can create unnecessary risks for road users,” Mr. Qaqara said.
Mr. Qaqara also called on communities along the Henderson–Mberande corridor to take ownership of the infrastructure and report any incidents of vandalism to the relevant authorities.
We appeal to everyone, particularly communities living along this road, to help us protect these facilities. This is public infrastructure provided for the benefit and safety of our people. If you see someone damaging or removing a road sign, please report it to MID or the relevant authorities.
Road signs play an important role in providing motorists with warnings and guidance, particularly when approaching speed humps and other traffic-calming measures. Missing or damaged signs can increase risks, especially for motorists travelling at night or during poor visibility.
MID therefore urges all motorists to observe road signs, reduce speed when approaching speed humps and exercise extra caution when travelling through areas where road improvement works are underway.
The Ministry also encourages communities, passengers and other road users along the corridor to help safeguard road signs and other public infrastructure and to report any vandalism or damage.
The road improvement works are being implemented by MID through LMCP, with CCECC undertaking the construction works, and with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands.
