Solomon Islands’ Emma Komasi has joined women from five other Pacific countries for rugby commentary and journalism training in Sydney.
She is among eight participants in the Oceania Rugby Commentary and Mobile Journalism Programme, known as Rugby CAMP, running from 12 to 18 October.
The women come from Solomon Islands, Fiji, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Tonga.
Oceania Rugby and ABC International Development are delivering the programme, which covers rugby commentary, mobile journalism and digital storytelling.
Participants are attending practical workshops and meeting sports reporters and commentators to learn how they cover international rugby.
ABC International Development said the programme also included behind-the-scenes access at Rugby WXV and Bledisloe Cup matches.
The group began the week with a welcome to Gadigal land by City of Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon, before meeting ABC International general manager Claire Gorman and touring the broadcaster’s studios.
The Sydney intensive follows introductory online training held in September.
Oceania Rugby said the programme aimed to develop women’s sports reporting skills and give Pacific voices a greater role in telling rugby stories.
The Australian Government supports the initiative through PacificAus Sports, as part of Oceania Rugby’s Rise Rugby programme.
