Caretaker Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare successfully defended his seat for the seventh consecutive time

Caretaker Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has successfully defended his seat in the East Choiseul Constituency for the seventh consecutive time. Sogavare, a significant figure in Solomon Islands politics, has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political landscape. He has served multiple terms as Prime Minister, with his leadership characterized by a mixture of controversy and accomplishment.

Manasseh Sogavare’s affiliation with China during his tenure as Prime Minister in the 11th Parliament has been characterized by a deliberate pursuit of closer economic and diplomatic ties with the Chinese government. One of the most significant moves in this regard was the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in September 2019, which involved severing ties with Taiwan. This decision aligned the Solomon Islands with China’s “One China” policy, signaling a clear shift in diplomatic allegiance.

The announcement of his victory was made by Returning Officer Christopher Makoni late this evening. Sogavare is the Political Wing Leader of the OUR Party, a stronghold in the Democratic Coalition for Government Advancement (DCGA).
