Italy approves SBD16.4 million for Solomon Islands projects in climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable agrifood systems.
The Solomon Islands Government has secured USD 2.02 million (approximately SBD 16.4 million) in funding from the Government of Italy for two projects aimed at strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure, promoting renewable energy and supporting sustainable agrifood systems.
The funding was approved during the 19th Joint Committee meeting under the Cooperation Programme between Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) and Austria, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain, held at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York on 20 October 2026.
The two project proposals were presented by Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands to the United Nations, Ms Fiona Indu and subsequently approved by the Joint Committee.
The approved projects will contribute to Solomon Islands’ national development priorities by strengthening infrastructure resilience and advancing sustainable, climate-smart development.
1. Environment and Climate-Resilient Infrastructure – Su’umoli Wharf
The project has been allocated USD 1,037,299 to support the development of climate-resilient infrastructure at Su’umoli Wharf.
The funding will be channelled through the National Transport Fund, with implementation undertaken by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development.
2. SINERGY: Scaling Integrated Nature-based and Renewable Energy Solutions for Climate-Resilient Agrifood Systems in Solomon Islands
The project has been allocated USD 987,000 to advance integrated nature-based solutions and renewable energy initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience and sustainability of agrifood systems in Solomon Islands.
The project will be jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology.
Following the approval of the two proposals, Ms Indu expressed the Solomon Islands Government’s deep appreciation to the Government of Italy for its generous financial assistance.
She also acknowledged Austria, Luxembourg and Spain for their continued cooperation and support for the development priorities of Pacific Island countries.
The Cooperation Programme brings together Pacific Small Island Developing States and the four European partners—Austria, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain—to support development initiatives across the Pacific. Over the past 19 years, the partnership has contributed to efforts to address the development challenges and climate vulnerabilities facing Pacific Island countries.
The approval of the two projects marks a further step in strengthening Solomon Islands’ development partnerships and mobilising international support for climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainable agrifood systems.
