
Prime Minister Matthew Wale discusses transparency in disaster funding and recovery efforts following Cyclone Maila.
Prime Minister Matthew Wale has said the government intends to strengthen transparency and accountability in disaster recovery efforts, including the management of disaster-related funding.
Mr. Wale made the remarks during a meeting with Western Province Premier Billy Veo and members of the provincial executive while discussing recovery efforts following Cyclone Maila.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister said past disaster responses had faced challenges related to the management and use of relief funds. He stated that recovery efforts should focus on the needs of affected communities and be carried out in a transparent manner.
Mr. Wale also discussed the ongoing recovery process in areas affected by Cyclone Maila, including Choiseul and Western provinces.
Premier Veo welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit and said it provided an opportunity for national leaders to observe the impact of the cyclone on affected communities.
According to Premier Veo, Western Province is prepared to work with the national government on recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Cyclone Maila caused damage in several parts of the country, with recovery activities continuing in affected areas.
