Foreign Minister Rick Houenipwela and Japan discuss healthcare, education, and bilateral cooperation
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Rick Houenipwela, received a courtesy visit from Japan’s Ambassador to Solomon Islands, H.E. Keiichi Hagiuchi, on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.
Ambassador Hagiuchi congratulated Minister Houenipwela on his recent appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
In response, Minister Houenipwela thanked the Ambassador for the visit and acknowledged Japan’s longstanding friendship and continued support to Solomon Islands over many years of bilateral cooperation.
Minister Houenipwela reaffirmed that Japan remains an important development and bilateral partner for Solomon Islands, with both countries sharing common values on peace, democratic governance, rule of law, and regional cooperation.
He also acknowledged Japan’s continued support towards Solomon Islands’ social, economic and infrastructure development, including efforts that strengthen human resource capacity.
During the meeting, Ambassador Hagiuchi highlighted Japan’s commitment to improving health services and addressing non-communicable diseases, including support for the Kilu’ufi Hospital Improvement and Expansion Project in Malaita Province.
Minister Houenipwela acknowledged Japan’s support for the project, valued at approximately SBD120 million, stating that it will significantly improve access to healthcare services for communities in Malaita Province and contribute towards Solomon Islands’ efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health and wellbeing.
The meeting also discussed the Government’s free education policy under the GREAT Coalition and opportunities for Japan to support the initiative. Both sides further discussed ways to encourage more Japanese private sector investment in Solomon Islands.
Minister Houenipwela concluded by reaffirming Solomon Islands’ commitment to mutual respect, shared prosperity, and a strong long-term partnership with Japan.
