World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI) is assisting adolescent girls at Turarana Community High School, a remote school in Guadalcanal Province, with sanitary hygiene kits. The support will help girls manage menstruation safely, confidently and with dignity while continuing their education.

The sanitary kits were delivered to female students this week through WVSI’s School Health and Hygiene Project – Phase 4, which aims to improve menstrual hygiene management and help reduce barriers that can contribute to girls missing school during their menstrual periods.

For students at Turarana, access to sanitary hygiene products can be particularly challenging because the school is located far from town.

Madam Crystal Alisa Lyndon expressed her appreciation to World Vision Solomon Islands for providing the sanitary kits, saying the project is providing valuable assistance to students and could help reduce absenteeism associated with menstruation.

She said many students live far from town, making it difficult for them to regularly purchase sanitary pads.

“The students stay far from town, and the school is located in a remote place. The project will relieve students from having to pay for sanitary pads, which are too costly for them.”

Madam Lydon also said the availability of the kits would give girls greater confidence because they have the necessary hygiene supplies available when they need them and can carry them to school.

The School Health and Hygiene Project is currently in its fourth phase, with sanitary kit distribution being one of its key activities.

The project is targeting four schools in Guadalcanal Province:

  • Lambi Community High School
  • Ngalimuata Community High School
  • Turarana Community High School
  • Ghaobata Community High School

Each sanitary kit contains one bath soap, three packs of sanitary pads, one menstrual cycle calendar and three pairs of underwear.

The initiative supports girls to manage menstruation with greater confidence and dignity while helping them remain engaged in their education.

For students in remote communities, access to these basic hygiene supplies can help remove an important barrier to regular school attendance and participation.

The School Health and Hygiene Project is funded by NBSI-Trust and forms part of WVSI’s ongoing commitment to supporting the health, dignity, well-being and educational opportunities of adolescent girls in Solomon Islands, particularly those living in remote and underserved communities.
