Solomon Islands seasonal workers based in Hastings, New Zealand, have donated 24 wheelchairs to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.
The Solomon Islands Recognised Seasonal Employers Association (SIRSEA) handed over the wheelchairs on 13 October to help patients who have difficulty walking or moving around the hospital.
Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Titus Nasi said the wheelchairs would make it easier for patients with mobility difficulties to access hospital services safely.
He said the equipment would also help improve patients’ comfort and dignity while receiving care.
Workers give back
SIRSEA vice-president Bruno Lee Joel said the donation was the association’s first since it was established in 2025.
The association includes Solomon Islands workers employed by three New Zealand companies: Teamwork HB Ltd, Gourmet Blue Berries and Turners and Growers Global Ltd.
He said members wanted to contribute to the wellbeing of people back home through practical support for the hospital.
Dr Nasi welcomed the assistance and said partnerships with community organisations could help improve healthcare services.
