Guadalcanal Premier Seeks Infrastructure Development Through China’s Belt and Road Initiative
Guadalcanal Premier Willie Atu has expressed his enthusiasm for China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), highlighting its potential to enhance connectivity and drive economic growth. During a consultation with a visiting delegation from Guangdong Province, Premier Atu emphasized the need for improved infrastructure across Guadalcanal Island.
“Guadalcanal, as the host of the capital city, still struggles with connectivity due to a lack of proper road infrastructure,” Atu said. He noted that this shortfall forces many residents to rely on boat travel, which is often unsafe, especially during poor weather conditions. He proposed that the delegation consider supporting road construction across the island to facilitate the transportation of goods and improve access between communities and the capital, Honiara.
The meeting was a significant moment in the 40-year sister relationship between Guadalcanal and Guangdong. Premier Atu pointed out that Guadalcanal was one of the first provinces in the Solomon Islands to establish a sister relationship with a Chinese city, predating the national government’s formal recognition of the One-China policy.
“I understand that large-scale projects like road construction fall under the jurisdiction of the national government,” Atu acknowledged. “However, as a provincial government, it is our responsibility to share our aspirations and advocate for development.”
He also proposed reviving the Guangdong-Guadalcanal Venture, suggesting the construction of a building to symbolize the enduring friendship between the two provinces. “This building would serve as a landmark celebrating our relationship,” Atu said, citing recent achievements such as the National Stadium and the Comprehensive Clinic, both built with Chinese support.
Wang Xuecheng, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Guangdong Committee, assured Premier Atu that the delegation had carefully considered the proposals.
“The Guangdong-Guadalcanal Venture is a promising idea that may resonate with our government,” Wang said. He committed to conveying Premier Atu’s requests, including the infrastructure and health sector proposals, to his superiors in China. Wang also expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Guadalcanal Provincial Assembly and its Speaker.
“Health is a sector where the Chinese government has a strong track record of support,” Wang noted, emphasizing its potential as a focus area for future collaboration. The visiting delegation from Guangdong Province included Ding Yonghua, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Ambassador of the PRC to the Solomon Islands, Mr. Chen Qiuyan, Director General of the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the CPPCC Guangdong Committee, Mr. Li Zhao, Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the CPPCC Guangdong Committee, Mr. Gu Wenlong, Director of the Political Section, Mr. Hu Jinhao, Interpreter.
