Australia delivers water sports park for games to the government and people of Solomon Islands.
The Iumi Water Sports Park at Henderson was officially handed over to Solomon Islands Prime Minister and Minister for the 2023 Pacific Games, Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, by Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton, on September 5, 2023.
Funded by the Australian government at a cost of SBD 4.3 million, the Iumi Water Sports Park is a crucial part of Australia’s support for the Solomon Islands Government in preparation for the 2023 Pacific Games. This open water facility is specifically designed for water sports like kayaking, sailing, and more.
The Iumi Water Sports Park is just one component of Australia’s AUD 17 million support package for the 2023 Pacific Games. All events hosted at this venue during the Games will be open to the public free of charge.
This infrastructure project enhances facilities for the community and sports enthusiasts alike, elevating Solomon Islands’ recreational offerings and improving overall accessibility for athletes during the Games.
The project’s scope of work includes:
- Construction of Boat Storage Building: A prefabricated storage facility provides secure storage for outrigger/va’a canoes.
- Ablution Block: A modern restroom facility ensures visitors have access to clean and well-maintained facilities.
- Fencing: A robust fencing system enhances security and clearly marks the area.
- Installation of Security Lights: Strategically placed security lighting ensures visitor safety.
- Installation of Borehole: A borehole water supply has been drilled and installed to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply.
- UXO Survey: An initial comprehensive Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) survey was conducted to ensure construction safety.
- Construction of Access Road: An access road provides easy and convenient entry to the site.
- Finishing Works: Ongoing finishing works are being carried out to refine and beautify the entire site.
The success of this project is attributed to the collaborative efforts of various contractors and sub-contractors who have played crucial roles in ensuring high-quality and timely execution of their tasks. Specific contractors and their contributions include:
