A record 50 Solomon Islanders are preparing to begin their studies in Australia in 2027 after completing pre-departure training ahead of their scholarship experience.

This year’s intake represents the largest Australia Awards Solomon Islands cohort to date.

The scholars will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate studies across fields important to Solomon Islands’ development, including economic growth, education, health, governance, infrastructure, STEM, aviation, and environment and natural resource management.

Women make up two-thirds of the cohort and outnumber men in five of the eight priority fields of study, reflecting strong women’s participation across the 2027 intake.

The cohort also brings experience from a diverse range of organisations, including the Central Bank of Solomon Islands, National Referral Hospital, Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, Solomon Islands National University, government ministries and provincial governments.

As part of the week’s activities, scholars were formally farewelled at a dinner at Heritage Park Hotel, bringing together scholars, government representatives and other guests to celebrate the 2027 cohort.

Prime Minister Matthew Wale thanked the Australian Government for its longstanding support for Solomon Islands and described the scholarships as an investment in people that should ultimately benefit the country.

“Australia has not invested in you so that Solomon Islands may lose you. This award is not a ticket out. It is a loan to your nation, repaid not in money, but in service,” he said.

The Prime Minister also encouraged scholars to make the most of their studies, remain connected to their faith, language and culture, and return home ready to address Solomon Islands’ development challenges.

“Go well. Learn well. And come back to build.”

Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Jeff Roach said: “Australia’s support through the Australia Awards is an investment in the future of Solomon Islanders. It is about developing leaders and building the skills and expertise Solomon Islands needs for future prosperity.”

“Australia Awards alumni are already making a huge contribution to national life in Solomon Islands. We can’t wait to see what these talented students will achieve when they return home and join them.”

The five-day pre-departure training prepared scholars for the transition to study and life in Australia, covering academic expectations, Australian culture and society, scholarship responsibilities, wellbeing, and practical departure and arrival arrangements.

For the scholars, the training also provided an opportunity to build connections with others preparing for the same journey.

“I’m excited about this opportunity, although it’s a big change. The training has helped me feel prepared for life and study in Australia and connect with other scholars before we leave,” said Ruth Menanopo, who will study a Bachelor of Inclusive Education at Flinders University.

Ruth was also awarded the 2027 Ed Smith Memorial Prize, which provides additional support for leadership and professional development during her studies.

“As a teacher, I’m passionate about ensuring every child has access to quality education, regardless of their circumstances. Through this scholarship, I hope to gain the skills and experience to help create more inclusive learning environments in Solomon Islands.”

“We go to Australia to learn, but we return home to serve.”

Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to support the next generation of global leaders. After completing their studies, the 2027 scholars will join a strong network of Solomon Islands alumni using their skills and experience across government, business, civil society, education and communities.

More than 850 Solomon Islanders have studied in Australia through Australia Awards and other Australian-supported programs.
