The Solomon Islands women’s football stars has paid a visit to the Lionesses at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia as part of a distinguished group of Pacific female football players.
A distinguished group of Pacific female football players and officials were in Sydney this past week for a special sports diplomacy program associated with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
Leading officials in women’s sports from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa are granted access to a training session with the England Women’s Football team at the Central Coast Mariners’ home ground in Gosford.
During their stay, the delegation received comprehensive briefings on coaching, nutrition, and women’s sports development. The UK government proudly sponsors this visit as part of their partnership with the Pacific.
Vicki Treadell, the British High Commissioner to Australia, expressed her delight at having this remarkable Pacific group with them. She emphasized the UK’s continuous commitment to advocating for all aspects of women’s sports worldwide. Their focus is on breaking barriers to women and girls’ participation, raising the profile of women’s sports, and ensuring equitable representation for women at all levels within the sector.
Nicola Noble, the UK Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji, expressed her excitement in hosting the Pacific delegation in Australia for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She highlighted the unifying impact of sports across the Pacific and the fantastic program of activities planned for the visitors throughout the week.
Ileen Pegi Moffat, Captain of the Solomon Islands National Women’s Football Team, described the visit as an opportunity worth sharing with her team. Training alongside the Lionesses, England’s Women’s Football team, is an unforgettable experience for them personally and professionally.
Over the previous weekend, Thomas Coward, the British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands and Nauru, had the pleasure of meeting the two delegates from Solomon Islands during their training in Honiara. He congratulated them on the unique opportunity they have been given.
The senior team’s captain and vice-captain of the Solomon Islands Women’s National Football team, Ms Pegi and Solo will then return to Honiara on Saturday 29
July.
Prior to their return, they will have the opportunity to watch the game between England and Denmark this Friday evening.
