SINTA urges a 1:35 teacher-student ratio as Solomon Islands prepares to introduce free education in 2027.

The Solomon Islands National Teachers Association (SINTA) is calling for a teacher-student ratio of one teacher to 35 students as the Government prepares to introduce free education in 2027.
Speaking at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at Nguvia Community High School, SINTA President Frank Roboolite’e said increased access to education should be supported by enough teachers, learning materials and classroom space.
He said a shortage of teachers could lead to overcrowded classrooms and place additional pressure on teachers.
Mr Roboolite’e said maintaining an appropriate teacher-student ratio is important to support teaching and learning as more students enter the education system.
“If we want quality education, we must invest in the people we provide it. If we want every child to have a fair opportunity, we must invest in the classroom.”
He said the proposed 1:35 ratio should be considered as the Government prepares to roll out free education in January 2027.
SINTA also called for continued investment in teacher training, learning materials, school infrastructure and staffing.
Mr Roboolite’e said teachers have responsibilities beyond classroom lessons, including helping students develop confidence, discipline, creativity and critical thinking.
He said teachers cannot provide quality education without adequate support, resources and suitable working conditions.
The SINTA President also called for greater recognition of the teaching profession, saying investment in teachers is important to the country’s future.
“Standing with teachers means standing with the future of the Solomon Islands.”
The association’s call comes as the Government advances its education reforms, including the planned introduction of free education in 2027.
SINTA says increased access to education should be matched by adequate teachers, resources and infrastructure to support students and teachers.
