Solomon Ports and Australia’s NTRO will develop a GreenPort Framework to strengthen sustainable and resilient port operations.
The Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) has signed an agreement with Australia’s National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) to develop a new GreenPort Framework for the Solomon Islands.
The framework will support SIPA’s commitment to strengthening the sustainability and resilience of Solomon Islands’ ports, while reflecting local priorities, environmental values and operating conditions.
SIPA Chief Executive Officer George Rausi said the initiative was an important step for the organisation.
“Our ports are critical to the Solomon Islands economy and our communities. This framework will help us continue developing our ports while protecting our environment and strengthening resilience for future generations,” Mr Rausi said.
NTRO Executive General Manager Jason Sprott said NTRO was proud to work alongside SIPA.
“This will be a genuinely Solomon Islands-led framework. Our role is to bring our experience from across the Pacific, share knowledge and work side-by-side with George and the SIPA team to develop something practical, locally grounded and built for long-term impact,” Mr Sprott said.
The project will now move into the co-development and stakeholder engagement phase, ensuring the final framework reflects the needs and aspirations of SIPA and the Solomon Islands.
Since 2017, Solomon Ports has been actively implementing Green Port initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations and promoting more sustainable practices across the organisation. These initiatives include improving energy efficiency through the introduction of greener technologies, such as energy-efficient LED lighting at our International and Domestic Terminals, as well as promoting environmentally responsible workplace practices and improved waste management.
Our commitment to sustainability also extends beyond our port operations through community support and environmental awareness initiatives, recognising the important role Solomon Ports plays in protecting our environment and supporting the communities in which we operate.
Through these ongoing efforts, Solomon Ports continues to strengthen its commitment to efficient, responsible and sustainable port operations, while contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for Solomon Islands.
This commitment also culminated in Solomon Ports winning the 2022 International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) Sustainability Award, marking the first international award ever received by the Port and recognising Solomon Ports’ efforts towards sustainable and environmentally responsible port operations.
