ULMWP congratulates Prime Minister Matthew Wale and calls for continued regional attention to West Papua.
The United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) has issued a statement congratulating Solomon Islands Prime Minister-elect Matthew Wale on his election.
ULMWP Executive President Menase Tabuni said the people of West Papua extend their congratulations and expressed hope that Prime Minister Wale will continue to support Pacific and Melanesian discussions on West Papua’s political future.
ULMWP Executive Vice President Octovianus Mote noted Mr Wale’s previous engagement on West Papua matters, including his role as Opposition Leader and as Solomon Islands Special Envoy on West Papua between 2015 and 2016.
He said the movement hopes regional leaders, including in Melanesia and the wider Pacific, will continue dialogue on human rights and political issues in West Papua.
The statement also called for broader international awareness of developments in the region and urged continued engagement from governments, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.
ULMWP reaffirmed its call for continued attention to human rights concerns and political developments in West Papua.
