Solomon Islands is improving airport safety and reliability through a five-year asset management plan for Honiara and Munda airports.
The Government of Solomon Islands, through the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), is strengthening airport safety and operational reliability through the World Bank-supported Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
The Regional Airport Asset Maintenance (RAAM) assignment is being delivered by the joint venture of Gyros Corporation and Pacific Consultants Company Limited following the signing of the contract on 19 November 2025. The assignment aims to improve the management and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment at Honiara International Airport and Munda International Airport through a five-year Asset Management Plan (AMP).
The AMP will help the Solomon Islands Airports Corporation Limited (SIACL) transition from reactive repairs to planned maintenance, enabling potential problems to be identified early and addressed before they affect airport operations.
An assessment of airport assets, including lighting, air navigation systems, communications equipment, electrical and mechanical systems, security equipment and vehicles, found that most remain in serviceable condition. However, some require repairs, closer monitoring or consideration for replacement to maintain safe and reliable operations.
Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, said that “effective asset management was essential to maintaining safe and dependable airport services. Proper planning and timely maintenance are important to ensuring our airport infrastructure and equipment remain safe, reliable and fit for purpose. This initiative will help strengthen our ability to identify maintenance priorities, use resources effectively and sustain these important national assets.
The AMP will guide maintenance priorities based on asset condition, operational importance and the risks associated with equipment failure. Depending on the needs of each asset, interventions may include repairs, rehabilitation or replacement.
Through SIRAP2, the initiative will strengthen SIACL’s capacity to manage airport infrastructure, improve maintenance planning and support the long-term sustainability of aviation assets.
Beyond the RAAM activities, SIRAP2 continues to deliver critical institutional strengthening and project management in country. This includes the design and supervision of and civil works; technical support and training to MCA, SIACL, CAASI and Solomon Airlines; climate resilient road asset management improvement; Road safety audits and capacity improvement; and activities to address the identified gender gap within MCA and technical support and training to address GBV.
