Boxing Solomon Islands in collaboration with the Solomon Islands Boxing Association will be hosting a series of pacific boxing bouts commencing mid this month, June.
The ‘Pacific Boxing Challenge Series’ will see the Royal Fiji Royal Military Army taking on Solomon Boxers on 21 and 22 June at the Multi-purpose Hall. President of the Solomon Islands Boxing Association, Patrick Morris says SIABA is happy for the collaboration which will see a series of boxing bouts with other Pacific boxers in the last half of the year, leading towards the games. Morris said this is the first Pacific Boxing Challenge organised for Solomon Islands boxers and he is grateful to the organisers of this sporting event.
“In the past we didn’t have these sorts of boxing bouts because we needed finances for these sorts of competitions”, Morris said.
He said the Pacific Boxing Series will certainly boost the boxers’ preparation for the Pacific Games. Morris said with the establishment of the National Institute of Sports and the country preparing for the Pacific Games, the series of boxing challenges will contribute to the preparation of the Solomon Boxers for the games.
Morris said more youths are now interested in boxing, which is mostly attributed to the development of the National Institute of Sports, SINIS and the Pacific Games.
“Now with SINIS and sponsors coming in, it has really boosted the development of boxing in the country”, Morris said.
Recently the banner and the unveiling of the first challenge trophy for series 1 was launched at the Heritage Park Hotel. Major sponsors to the event includes Satsol and Be-mobile. The organizers are optimistic the first challenge between the Fiji Military Army and Solomon Islands boxers will be a success. 20 boxers from the Fiji Royal Military Army will compete in the first bout of Pacific Boxing Challenge Series in Honiara on 21 and 22 June 2023.
