Former Governor-General of Solomon Islands, Sir David Vunagi, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at his residence in Okea, North Guadalcanal. He was 74 years old.
Sir David served as the country’s Governor-General from 2019 to 2024. He was originally from Samasodu in Isabel Province and had been unwell for some time before his passing.
Before his tenure as Governor-General, Sir David had a long career in education and the Anglican Church. He began as a schoolteacher before joining the ministry. He later became the third Bishop of the Diocese of Temotu (1999–2009) and was elected as the fifth Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia and Bishop of the Diocese of Central Melanesia in 2009, a role he held until his retirement in 2015.
In 2019, while serving as Principal of Selwyn College, Sir David was elected as Governor-General. He served in this role until 2024, earning recognition for his commitment and leadership.
His passing marks the end of a distinguished career in both church and state. Tributes have been extended from various sectors, recognizing his contributions to the nation.
