Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare backs federal system recommendations, instructs Constitutional Reform Unit to prepare Cabinet paper seeking Cabinet’s endorsement.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has embraced the recommendations put forth by the Guadalcanal Provincial Government, the Eminent Persons Group, and the Peoples Congress regarding the potential adoption of a Federal System of Government.
Making the announcement during the 39th Second Appointed Day celebrations of Guadalcanal Province on Tuesday, Sogavare expressed his satisfaction with the suggested processes from these three entities. He firmly believes that the proposed measures will yield positive outcomes similar to those attainable through a peer review of the draft constitution.
Sogavare stated, “In light of this, I have instructed the Constitutional Reform Unit (CRU) to prepare a cabinet paper seeking the Cabinet’s endorsement for the immediate implementation of the State Government system. Additionally, a Constitutional Amendment Bill aimed at revising Section 61 of the Constitution will be presented in the ongoing parliamentary session to initiate this process.”
During his address, the Prime Minister extended his gratitude to Guadalcanal Premier Francis Sade, the Assembly Members, and his fellow Parliamentarians from Guadalcanal within the DCGA (Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement). He applauded their steadfastness in advocating for this cause within the government framework.
“This showcases authentic leadership and a commitment to our nation’s peace and stability. The policy carries substantial weight in fortifying our delicate peace process and aligns with recommendations from the ongoing discussions of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report in the Parliament,” Sogavare remarked.
With a resolute tone, Prime Minister Sogavare assured the public of his unwavering dedication to preventing a recurrence of the disorder that once plagued the nation due to negligence on this matter. “I wish to reassure the citizens of Guadalcanal and our entire nation that I will not falter in this endeavor,” he affirmed.
