Opposition calls for equal disaster response and practical recovery action after Cyclone Maila impacts

Honiara, Solomon Islands – The Parliamentary Opposition acknowledges the hardship currently faced by communities in Western and Choiseul Provinces following the impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila.

Many families continue to face the loss of homes, food gardens, livelihoods, schools, and essential community infrastructure. During times of national disaster, Solomon Islanders expect their leaders to stand with affected communities and provide reassurance and support.

The Opposition therefore recognises the importance of national leaders visiting affected areas and listening directly to the concerns of ordinary citizens.

At the same time, leadership must ultimately be measured not only by words of comfort, but by practical action, operational response, and equal national attention to all provinces facing hardship and emergency situations.

Former Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele had already undertaken a solidarity visit to affected communities in Western and Choiseul Provinces last month following Cyclone Maila, during a period when national disaster response efforts and recovery coordination were already underway.

This naturally raises legitimate public questions about what tangible operational outcomes, recovery measures, or emergency actions have resulted from Prime Minister Wale’s latest reassurance visit beyond public messaging and media visibility.

At the same time, the Opposition notes growing public concern regarding perceived inconsistencies in national response attention, particularly in light of reports surrounding missing persons incidents and ongoing emergency concerns in Temotu Province during the same period.

The Opposition also expresses sympathy and concern for the people and families of Temotu Province affected by these recent incidents and ongoing uncertainties during this difficult period.

Many Solomon Islanders are openly asking whether all provinces are receiving equal urgency, equal visibility, and equal emergency response support from the national government.

These concerns should not be dismissed lightly.

When national leaders state that the government belongs to the people and exists to serve all Solomon Islanders, citizens will naturally expect those principles to apply equally across every province and every community, regardless of geography or political circumstance.

The Opposition believes this moment requires practical leadership grounded in effective disaster coordination, transparent recovery planning, clear implementation priorities, and sustained Cabinet attention to urgent domestic national issues.

The Opposition also notes the announcement that Prime Minister Matthew Wale will travel to Australia next week for his first official overseas visit since taking office.

While the Opposition recognises the strategic importance of Solomon Islands’ international partnerships and diplomatic relations, the Prime Minister must not allow our nation to be rushed into the center of regional superpower anxieties. Citizens should reasonably question the timing of fast-tracked overseas engagements while significant domestic recovery challenges, emergency concerns, and national governance matters remain unresolved at home.

At this early stage of the Government’s term, our focus must remain strictly local. Solomon Islanders expect strong Cabinet coordination, visible domestic leadership, and focused attention on the immediate needs of the country and its people, rather than early entanglements in regional geopolitical maneuvering.

The Parliamentary Opposition stands with all affected communities during this difficult period and supports genuine disaster recovery efforts while continuing to hold the Executive Government accountable to serve all Solomon Islanders equally, fairly, and consistently.
